Using Motivational Interviewing in Treating Chemical Addiction with Sex Offenders
This is a training on how clinicians can utilize motivational interviewing as part of treating chemical addiction in sec offenders. This workshop incorporates the notion that chemical addiction is the most common feature in those that sexually offend and therefore, reducing the likelihood of re-offending may involve reducing the risk of substance use.
Learning Objectives
- Be able to identify the core aspects of a motivational assessment during substance abuse evaluations of sex offenders.
- Be able to identify contributing factors in terms of the relationship with chemical addiction and sexual offending.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of separating chemical addiction from traditional offender treatment versus integrated treatment.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of the various "sexual offenses" typically seen by addiction professionals.
Worshop Leader: Rick Hall, MA, MSW, LICSW
Rick holds a Masters in Social Work (Fordham University – New York, NY) and a Masters in Criminal Justice (UMass Lowell) and is licensed as an independent clinical social worker. He is the Clinical Director of the Mass General Hospital (MGH) Charlestown Monument Street Counseling Center. He has expertise and clinical interest in the application of Motivational Enhancement Therapy with dual diagnosis patients as wells as training and clinical interest in forensic social work. Rick maintains a private practice in Rerading, MA. He is also an instructor at the University of Massachusetts Boston Alcohol/Chemical Dependency Treatment Services Program (A/CDTSP).
