Motivational Interviewing: Empowering Clients to Change
This is a training on Motivational Interviewing, a counseling approach that has been developed to assist resistant clients to change. A general overview of the theory and concepts related to Motivational Interviewing will be presented. Specific techniques will also be presented using demonstration and role plays. Introductory and advanced skills will be taught over the two days.
Learning Objectives
- develop a conceptualization of resistant or ambivalent clients, & will gain an understanding of the role of motivational techniques in addressing resistance.
- gain a general understanding of motivational interviewing and its theoretical background.
- learn specific motivational interviewing skills through a variety of teaching approaches including discussions, demonstrations and role plays.
- increase their understanding of the use of the Stages of Change model in matching counseling approaches to clients’ motivation.
Worshop Leader: David Price, LMHC, LADC
David is a Clinical Supervisor at Healthcare and Rehabilitation Services in Brattleboro, Vermont and works with adults having co-occurring disorders. He is also an Instructor for the University of Massachusetts Alcohol and Drug Counseling Certification Program & a Motivational Interviewing trainer (online & on-campus). He is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor in the state of MA. His Masters in Counseling Psychology was attained from the University of North Texas. His career has included clinical and supervisory work, program development and training in a variety of mental health and substance abuse settings for the past 26 years. He has taught college level courses and conducted numerous trainings on mental health topics. He is also a published researcher and author.
