The Art of Spiritual Counseling: Offering hope to those caught in the web of addiction

The importance of the spiritual dimension of addiction has long been recognized in the recovery community. Less defined and understood is the role of spirituality within the clinical setting. This workshop will provide education and insight into the integration of spirituality within the recovery treatment settings.

Learning Objectives

  • Examine concepts related to spirituality and psychology.
  • Understand the difference between religion and spirituality.
  • Explore the role of spiritual counseling in the treatment of addiction and mental illness in individuals and families.
  • Examine practices which support a spiritual approach to living.

Worshop Leader: John Maskery, MA in Theology, LCSW, LADC – I

John is the utilization review clinician for the Dual Disorder Unit at High Point Treatment Center in Plymouth. There he also conducts educational groups on the topics of bipolar disorder, the biomedical model of addiction, and relapse prevention. Prior to High Point, he worked at Gosnold Treatment Center in Falmouth in the inpatient detoxification unit. Mr. Maskery was also a director of the men’s program at Steppingstone and a chaplain assistant at MCI-Norfolk where he worked in jail diversion (diverting inmates from jail to residential treatment). His first position was at North Cottage in Norton where he was the became the first program coordinator, after writing the initial RFP for the program. He is a faculty member of the University of Massachusetts Alcohol/Chemical Dependency Treatment Services Program (A/CDTSP), Plymouth site.
