Geographic Information Technologies Certificate

Geographic Information Science is a highly demanding specialization that combines various aspects of computer science with geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, cartographic visualization, spatial statistics, and global positioning systems (GPS) for the purpose of studying and solving geographical problems. UMass Boston’s Certificate Program in GIScience, administered through the Department of Earth and Geographic Sciences, offers a set of six courses, which teach the concepts, principles, techniques, and applications of GIScience.

Note: This program is transitioning to a graduate certificate. As of Fall 2004 only 6 credits in the undergraduate certificate can be transferred into the graduate certificate.

Who Should Enroll

The program is open to all undergraduates at the University of Massachusetts Boston, in addition to non-matriculated students and working professionals who are interested in obtaining a certificate of study. The program is of particular interest to those majoring in Earth and Geographic Sciences. Of six required courses for the program, four courses may count toward the major. Non-matriculated students who meet all program requirements receive a certificate of completion.
