The course offers an historical survey of art and architecture of the ancient world, giving particular emphasis to Egyptian, Greek and Roman cultures. Students are also introduced to the arts in Medieval Europe, with a special focus on the Romanesque and Gothic styles.

Description:
An historical survey of Western art and architecture from the fifteenth century to the twentieth century. The course deals with different aspects of the art of the Renaissance in Italy and the North, the Baroque and Rococo, Neoclassicism and Romanticism, Realism and Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism.

Description:
This lecture course introduces the student to the history of art in America from the 17th century through the early 20th century. American artists differ from their European counterparts as they reinterpret forms of expression to create art that is directly related to American culture, society, politics and economics. We will examine painting, sculpture, architecture and photography in the context of American life and explore the philosophical and ideological influences that define a uniquely American aesthetic sensibility. The course requirements include class museum visits, two short papers, mid term and final exams.

This course examines U.S. documentary photographs as constructions of the past that articulate the social and political assumptions of their times. We will assess the impact of these photographs on their contemporary audiences and how they have shaped Americans’ collective memories of such events as the conquest of the West, mass immigration, the Great Depression, and 9/11.

Description:
Nantucket Light 08 will be an intensive, in-depth painting experience that will use the Plein Air painting approach as a jumping-off point to the summer landscape. Initially we will look at the techniques of its inventor, Corot, and his circle. Our investigation will move quickly to contemporary approaches and attitudes. Investigating landscape in broad interpretation will be encouraged; from the macro to the micro, fauna, flora and wildlife could become subjects. Also, use of the camera and working from photographs will be explored. Slide shows, demonstrations, one-on-one meetings, and group critiques, as well as working outside and in the studio, will comprise our activity. Come energized and prepared to get a lot of painting done!

During their stay, students will be housed at Gouin Village, a complex close to the shops and restaurants of historic downtown Nantucket. Classes will be held at one of the Nantucket Artists Association studios in town.
